-
The main topics in my teaching activity are digital and analogue integrated circuits, microprocessors and speech technology.
-
I was a pioneer to introduce in the Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications curriculum a new course in the field of microprocessors and their applications: “Microprocessor Architecture” since 1982. After 2002, a new complementary course is added: “Microcontrollers”. Both courses are at bachelor level and are intended to familiarize the student with the main features of the general-purpose microprocessors and microcontrollers, CISC and RISC architectures. Intel and ARM are the prototype families.
-
Since 1990 I introduced also a new course at master level: “Speech Technology”, recently renamed “Spoken Language Technology”. The methods and the devices for analysis, synthesis and recognition of the speech signal are presented. Current applications are concerned with speech coding, isolated word and continuous speech recognition, speaker verification and identification, human-computer dialogue.
-
For the new curriculum topics, I organized the laboratories (hard and soft) for the application classes. My students were my collaborators in designing the syllabus of the applications.
-
I am strongly encouraging the student contests in the fields of microcontrollers, embedded systems, robotics. I really believe that this kind of activities will be a real benefit for the students to apply their knowledge in the mention fields, to develop their expertise and improve their team spirit. As some examples, I mention “RoboChallenge” contest (www.robochallenge.ro) that I initiated in 2008 together wits my students, and “Freescale Race Challenge” organized in cooperation with Freescale Semiconductor Romania.
All my teaching activity takes place in the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technology, University “Politehnica” of Bucharest.

Since 1975, I coordinated over 200 Diploma Projects in the fields of microprocessor applications, electronic circuit simulation, speech signal processing, speech and speaker recognition etc. (before 2005 we had only 5 year engineering studies, with a Diploma Degree equivalent with Master; after 2005, we have two kinds of Diploma Degrees: Bachelor – 4 years and Master – 2 more years). Many of my former students are now my collaborators in developing some projects in the mentioned fields.

I am coordinating every two years The International Conference on Speech Technology and Human-Computer Dialogue – “SpeD”, which takes place in different major university centers of the country.
After 2000, we decided to resume the organization of a Conference in the field of spoken language technology and human-computer dialogue (the first one was organized in the 80’s years). So, it was the birth of “SpeD” (“Speech and Dialogue”) Conference, which had in 2011 the 6th edition.
Under the Aegis of the Romanian Academy, in cooperation with the European Association for Signal and Image Processing (EURASIP) and IEEE, the organizers are the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technology from University “Politehnica” of Bucharest and, for each edition, another Faculty from one of the most important technical universities in the country (Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi, Constanţa, Braşov etc.)
The Conference will take place every two years.
"SpeD" is bringing together academics and industry professionals from universities, government agencies and companies to present their achievements in speech technology and related fields.
"SpeD" is a conference and international forum which will reflect some of the latest tendencies in spoken language technology and human-computer dialogue research as well as some of the most recent applications in this area.
Topics of interest are: ● Speech Analysis, Representations and Models. ● Spoken Language Recognition and Understanding ● Text-to-Speech Synthesis. ● Prosody Models and Generation. ● Speech-to-Speech Translation. ● Emotions and Expressive Speech Analysis and Synthesis. ● Speaker Identification and Verification in Biometric Systems and Security. ● Spoken Language Processing in the World Wide Web. ● Voice-Based Human-Computer Interfaces. ● Speech Interface Design and Human Factors Engineering. ● Speech Interface Implementation for Embedded / Network-Based Applications. ● Natural Language Processing. ● Data Mining and Search in Spoken Documents. ● Spoken Dialogue Systems, Applications and Standards. ● Dialogue Management. ● Language Resources and Knowledge Representation in Spoken Dialogue Systems.
Selected papers of the latest two editions of the Conference can be found in the IEEE Xplore database.
Al the details about the most recent edition of the Conference could be found on the site:
